چکیده
Malaria is one of the endemic diseases in tropical and subtropical areas. In Sudan, malaria is one of the common diseases and can sometimes be fatal. This prospective case control study was carried out in Khartoum State –Sudan to study the effect of malaria parasite infection on platelets count, mean platelet volume (MPV) and platelets distribution width (PDW) among malaria patients. A total of one hundred blood samples were collected (70 were malaria patients and 30 were control). The majority of the infected cases was due to Plasmodium Falciparum (44%) followed by Plasmodium vivax (35%) and lastly mixed infection There was a significant decrease (p ≤0.05) in the platelet count between the malaria infected and the control groups (101 x 10 /L ± 50 ) vs.( 300 x10 /L ± 89). Regarding platelet volume and platelet distribution width, there was a significant increase in their levels between the two groups (12.3 fl ± 2.4 vs 9.24 fl ± 1.5 and 14.57 fl ± 2.6 vs. 11.68 fl ± 1.9) respectively. When analyzing the effect of the parasite species and their effect on the different parameters studied, the mixed infection was found to have the highest effect on reducing platelet count and increased MPV and PDW. This study showed that Plasmodium falciparum is the main cause of malaria infection in majority of the patients . Low platelet count, high MPV and PDW are common features in malaria patients and the highest effect was found in the mixed infected cases.

Platelet distribution width, mean platelet volume and haematological parameters in patients with uncomplicated plasmodium falciparum and P. vivax malaria
BACKGROUND The association between the haematological profile (including abnormal platelets) and malaria is not completely understood. There are few published data on haematological profiles of malaria patients in areas with unstable malaria transmission. The current study was conducted to investigate if the haematological parameters, including platelet indices, were reliable predictors for mi...
متن کاملMicroparticle Formation and Platelet Shrinkage in Type-I Glanzmman Thrombasthenia Platelets
Background: Activated normal platelets undergo many biochemical and morphological changes, some of which are apoptotic. Platelet derived microparticles and shrinked platelets as hallmark of platelet activation and apoptosis disperse surfaces containing procoagulant activity around injured vessels and tissues. This study was conducted to determine microparticles formation and platelet shrinkage ...
متن کاملAn Analysis of Hematological Parameters as a Diagnostic test for Malaria in Patients with Acute Febrile Illness: An Institutional Experience.
OBJECTIVES Hematological changes are among the most common complications encountered in malaria. This study analyzes and statistically evaluates the hematological changes as a diagnostic test for malaria in patients with acute febrile illness and whether these could guide the physician to institute specific antimalarial treatment. METHODS The present study was an observational study, conducte...
متن کاملPlatelet Factor 3 Based-clotting Time Assay as a Quality Marker for Long-term Storage of Platelet Concentrates
Background: Platelets rapidly lose their qualities usually after 5 day of storage. Different standard methods have been recommended to check the quality of platelets during storage which some of them show better correlation with other quality markers during storage. The purpose of this study was to demonstrate if platelet factor 3 (PF3) assay could be an indicator of storage lesion and provide ...
متن کاملDoes the Platelet Index Have a Guiding Role in the Association of Cancer and Pulmonary Thromboembolism?
Introduction: The diagnostic value of the D-dimer test varies with variable platelet numbers and functions in patients suffering from cancer and concomitant pulmonary thromboembolism (PTE). This requires easy and reliable evaluation tests. In this study, we aimed to investigate the hypothesis that platelet functions may be more guiding in the prediction and diagnosis of PTE rather than the numb...
